Lots of cleaning, organizing and getting ready for build next weekend. Thanks to everyone who helped out!

I went to see A Life in the Theatre last night. It was very good. Patrick Stewart was very funny, who knew? Although I wonder how the show will translate for the masses who do not work in the theatre. So much of the material seems to be inside jokes for those who work in the theatre, that I'm not sure the average theatre-goer will get them. Oh well, still a good time.

Spelling Bee Casting...

Hi all...

Congratulations to the first cast of the season! Classic (something by Moliere) - 1/20 - 1/21
Antigone by Jean Anouilh - 3/4 - 3/6
Baby with the Bathwater by Christopher Durang - 5/6 - 5/8
SpringFest 2010 - 6/7 - 6/10

Materials for Evita will be available on the first day of school in September, and possibly before that on my website. Evita is a huge show, and we will all have our work cut out for us in Sept. So, start doing your homework :o)

I'll see you all very soon. Enjoy the remainder of your summer! I'm going to sleep a lot.

Peace.

Schrauf

For Mr. Anonymous...

This posting is for Mr. Anonymous who commented today...

If I knew what the musical was going to be, I would tell you.

Here is the deal... It has taken my team and I a while to agree on a show. We have been looking since May, and I think we are closing in on one. I might have an answer for you by the end of the week.

In fact, I applied for the rights for the entire season this morning. The only one that has been approved is the Spring Comedy. So, we'll be working backwards this summer. The Spring Comedy will be Baby with the Bathwater by Christopher Durang.

I won't announce the other shows until they are A) chosen, and B) approved for production by the publishing companies. Hopefully, I will hear from them in next week or so.

So, be patient. And in the meantime, go see some shows. I've seen some awesome theatre in the past two weeks. If you want some recommendations, go see the following:
Our Town, The Norman Conquests, God of Carnage, Ruined, and Twelfth Night at the park. I also saw The Wiz which was fun, but has already closed. And make sure you make it to The Bacchae in the park, it looks to be awesome!

As soon as I know more, I'll update y'all...

Get off your computer and get a tan.

Schrauf.

Nice Things I Said About People...

In case you missed the Awards Ceremony, here are some nice things I said about this year's Theatre Award recipients:

Today the Theatre Department is honoring four outstanding students who have demonstrated not only a determined attitude and dedication to the department over the past four years, but also a commitment and unforced talent toward the art form of Theatre.

The Melissa J. Rubin Award for Outstanding Contribution to the art of Theatre, goes to two students this year.

The first honour, and I’ve spelled that honour for her family from across the pond, goes to a student who has been in 14 productions over the past 4 years and, in addition, has taken the photos for every production in the past few. In those fourteen shows over the past four years, I have seen monumental growth as both a young woman and a young artist. Emerging from the chorus of CHESS to roles such as Nurse Rached in CUCKOO’S NEST and Violet Venable in SUDDENLY LAST SUMMER, Phoebe has proven herself to be the standard that other actors look up to. At the pre-show meeting before our last production, it was not surprising to hear that Phoebe’s co-star thanked her. Not for anything she specifically did to help this actor, but because of what this younger actor learned from simply watching and working with Phoebe. In addition, her fun loving personality and constant willingness to take risks and look foolish (and we don’t have nearly enough time to list all of those,) have made for a director’s dream. I only see great things for you next year at the Julliard School, hello! Our first Melissa J. Rubin Award goes to Phoebe Dunn.

The next recipient of the Melissa J. Rubin Award goes to a student who I still don’t know how to spell her name in programs or on, lets say, awards plaques. Does it have an “I” or not? Regardless… she has been in 10 shows over the past four years; and if you look at her characters (Little Sally, Little Red, Young Florence, Youth) you might think she had been type cast. This couldn’t be further from the truth. Although these titles imply small stature (which might be true) they demanded power. In fact, I can’t remember the last time I encountered such a powerful personality, voice, and talent in such a compact package. Her comedic instinct is only matched by her enthusiasm for the work. In addition, she gives one heck of a hug. I only hope that she continues to explore her talent at Brown next year. The second Melissa J. Rubin Award goes to Elsa/Elsia Obus.

This is the first year that the Theatre Company has given an Award for Outstanding Contribution to Playwriting and Directing.

The first student to ever receive this award is certainly an original. During tech rehearsals this week another student made the revelation that P.J. doesn’t write “SpringFest” shows. I couldn’t agree more. In the past three years, his plays The Herald, The Trial of William Shakespeare, and Phantom Limb (which you can see next Wed. night) have stood on their own. Taking on issues such as the responsibility of public servants, anti-Semitism in the 17th Century, and the pressures of regal figure-heads, P.J.’s writing has demonstrated an understanding and level surpassing his peers. So it is not surprising to find out that P.J. is a multiple Golden Key Award winner or that he is going to Purchase - one of the most prestigious dramatic writing programs in the country. And so the fist ever Theatre Company Award to Playwriting and Directing goes to P.J. Grisar.

My last award today is the Theatre Company Award for Outstanding Contribution in Technical Theatre.

For the past year two words have become synonymous with disaster in the theatre. Dan Stern. I joke… but he is infamous for being the only student ever “fired” from a show! We still laugh about it. What I love about Dan, however, is that something still brought him back to the theatre. You don’t do theatre because you love it, you do it because you have to. Without it, you’re lost.

Whilst talking to his prom date on Tuesday night during Peter and the Wolf, Sally was surprised to see her date. She even went as far as to tell him to go home because he was quote ‘always here.” She was right. Unlike most students, Dan has had a seven day school week 8 out of the 10 months this year. Dan’s dedication is quite remarkable, and every member of the Theatre Co. owes him a great dept of gratitude. I think I speak for Angrette, Matt, Marco Jo, Linda, Howard, and of course me, when I say “There’s no way it would have been possible without you.” And that is why the Theatre Company Award for Technical Theatre goes to Dan Stern.

On a personal note…I would like to thank every student over the past four years who have contributed to the success of the HGHS Theatre Dept. (you know who you are and I love you.)

Lastly, I like to close with a quote from Constantin Stanlislavski who said that “dramatic art, like all other arts which hold a mirror up to life requires talent, study, and self-perfection.” Whether you were in Zombie Prom, or are getting ready for SpringFest next week… you have proven your talent and your want to study. So… now I wish you all the best on your paths to self-perfection.

End of the year!

Shows are over and I actually have a little free time now to post! If you couldn't tell by my laughter, the show was highly entertaining and you really found the fun in the piece. Everyone I spoke to said they highly enjoyed it, so you should all be very proud.

Mmm... hedgehog baked in clay.

Now that the show is over we can focus on some serious acting work. I'm very much looking forward to that.

Study hard for your exams this week, and if you are coming to see me for your Acting final, please come prepared and on time.

Rehearsals for Rhinoceros will resume on Friday. To be honest, it is a "Snow" Day, and by "Snow" I mean "Rain," and I am sitting here watching The Silence of the Lambs for the 1287th time, and thought posting sounded like a good idea. So hear we go...

Theatre Rep. Company - with this day off, I KNOW that you are all sitting home reviewing your lines. We really didn't need any more days off with a show that opens in exactly two weeks, and we just finished staging! We are really going to need to focus over the next few classes in order to be ready for The King Stag in two weeks. So, help me help you, and please come to class prepared and ready to work.

With that said, please also set aside Saturday, 1/17 and MLK Monday, 1/19 for rehearsals. Sat. we will learn the music with A.J., and the dance from Phoebe. A.J. and Phoebes - if you could coordinate getting the music of the dance figured out and choreographed before the 1/17 rehearsal, that would be extremely helpful.

Although I am looking forward to the show, I'm REALLY looking forward to beginning Meisner work right after Midterms. I think you are all ready for the work, provided you take it seriously and do all of the outside of class partner rehearsing that is needed. It will be more intense than any acting work you've done before, and it will probably drive you a little bit crazy; but if you commit to it, it will greatly improve your skills. But... one thing at a time. Right now focus on The King Stag.

Senior Musical - If you are a Senior, and you are musical (or not,) I know that you have signed up for Zombie Prom auditions that will begin on Monday, 1/12 and take place all of next week. In fact, you don't have to be musical at all to audition. Remember, the primary goal of SM is to come together as a class one final time, have some fun, and work together to produce a good time for the entire community to witness.

Regardless of musical talent or not, every student auditioning will be required to sing and dance for the audition (make sure you sign up for both!) Don't freak out... I promise to make it fun, and as painless a possible.

For the audition please prepare about 1 minute (a verse and chorus) of a song of your choosing. It can be anything you want, but try to make it something you know well and are comfortable with. Please bring the sheet music with you (that is the paper with the words and all the little black dots) to the audition so that Howard can accompany you on the piano whilst you sing. You don't have to prepare anything for the dance audition, just make sure you are dressed comfortably (NO BOOTS, UGGS, FLIP-FLOPS, HEELS, SHORT SKIRTS, ETC. T-Shirts, Sweats, Track Pants, Leotards, Sneakers, Jazz Shoes, etc. are all preferred.)

If you have any questions regarding auditions, please see Phoebe, Elizabeth, or Casey for the answers... or you can always come see me.

Please come out to audition, and encourage all of your friends to, also! This is the largest Senior class in Greeley history, so this will be one of your last chances to forge new friendships with people you might not have gotten the chance to know over the past four years, and solidify already strong friendships within your class. I'll do my best to make it fun for you while also helping you put on a great show for your family, friends, teachers, and community members. See you next week!

Rhinoceros - I'm happy to have started rehearsals (Trainwreck was fun and disturbing yesterday... Matt H. remind me to tell you something funny tomorrow.) Tomorrow I would like to do the table work and blocking for both tomorrow and the day we missed today. I realize that the LVP people will have to leave early (I can't wait to come see - and for your show to be over - on Saturday) but I don't want to fall behind.

Please remember what I said on the first day of rehearsal, you can't play symbolism, metaphor, representations and the like. Also, just because your genders are reversed, I don't want this to turn into a three hour Monty Python-esque sketch. Spend some serious time doing your homework on the meanings for your characters, getting in touch with them, and making your choices personal, emotionally charged, and recognizable. I'm expecting no less than brilliance (since your primary function as artists is to serve the text... and the text is brilliant.)

Don't forget ADS! You know what I expect of you and what your requirements are. Don't let the company down. That is all I will say on that.

Other than that, I hope that everyone had a nice break and that you are all recharged for the huge amount of work in the next three weeks. I know I am. So let's get to work.

I'll TRY to post soon... no promises... I'll be busy...

Off to a good start...

Hello all...

Things are going very well in rehearsals for Into the Woods. Here are a few things I want everyone to keep in mind:

1. Please check with Debbie or email me if you have any more conflicts that pop up. Or, there is an easier solution... Don't have any more conflicts! If anything comes up unexpectedly, please let someone on the production staff know ASAP, but other than that the conflicts listed on the initial sheet should be it.

2. Singing is the number one priority right now. If you are scheduled for a vocal and blocking rehearsal at the same time, go to the vocal rehearsal (just let me know where you are.) There will be plenty of time to catch up on blocking later. The score is tough, and that is where your focus should be right now.

3. ADS! Some ads have been trickling in, but not many. Please remember your responsibility to the company to go to the businesses you signed up for. I will be checking with all of you on Friday to see what businesses you have gone to, and which ones you will be going to over the weekend!

4. This weekend: There will be no dance rehearsal on Sat. 9/27. This would be a great time for everyone to go out and get ads, or join Angrette, Stagecraft, and I at build. We will be working on Sat. and Sun. from 9 - 5. If you would like to be involved in the creation of your set, we would really appreciate your help.

I hope everyone is having fun so far, and if you have any questions or concerns about rehearsals, ads, or anything at all, don't hesitate to ask.

Peace.

-Schrauf.

P.S. Ryan says hello to everyone, and misses working on a show with all of you. How do I know this, you ask? Because he calls me EVERY DAY! :o)

Getting ready to go Into the Woods

Well... It's about that time again.

I hope everyone is excited to come back and get to work on the first show of the year! Here are a couple of thoughts I had as I sat in my office putting together the audition materials:

1. The score is hard. Please start practicing your audition pieces as early as possible. They will be available online sometime next week, and on the callboard definitely by the first day of school. Also, we are going to need very talented student musicians to play the score. So, if you have an extremely talented friend that plays an instrument in band or orchestra, please encourage them to sign up for the pit.

2. Casting and roles. There are only 20 parts in the show - all principal or featured roles. This show does not lend itself well to a chorus. Don't let this discourage you from auditioning, but please make sure to bring your "A" game to auditions. Although all the characters are based on famous fairy tales, they require a lot of depth, both comedic and dramatic.

3. This show has a very special place in my heart, as it was one of my first major shows as a young actor. I'm really looking forward to it; and I have some interesting ideas (I think.)

If you have any questions, feel free to email me or check out the HGHS Theatre Co. webpage. Also, get the word out! Start talking up auditions, and encourage your friends to come out.

I will see you all right after Labor Day. Have a great "rest of your" summer.

-Schrauf

2008 HGHS Theatre Company Award Winners

In case you missed the ceremony in June, here are the recipients of this year's Theatre Awards (and the nice things I had to say about each of them:)

It is said that truly gifted artists need to be keen observers of life and nature. For an actor, he/she must be a keen observer of human behavior. I believe this to be true of our first award recipient. Unlike many actors, he does not need to feel the need to star in the “me show” while not on stage. I have even heard some teachers and other students describe him as quiet or introspective. I believe this is true because he is carefully observing and studying why people do what they do. It is when he is on stage that he brings all of this life and knowledge to the surface. On stage he is at his most dynamic. If anyone has seen any of his performances, especially that of Billy in Carousel last year, they know this to be true. In addition, he has the amazing talent of growing facial hair, which is a dream for a director working solely with teenagers. And so, for all these reasons, the first recipient of the Melissa J. Rubin Award for Outstanding Creativity in Theatre goes to Ted Caywood.

It is also said that strong actors make strong, bold choices. The next recipient has never been scared to take these risks, either emotionally or physically; if you saw his portrayal of John Merrick in The Elephant Man, you know what I’m talking about. In four years he has allowed me to dye his hair, shave his head, soak him with water causing him to freeze on stage, have his fellow actors pummel him with metal engine parts, and he even allowed me to behead him. This in addition to playwriting, producing, directing, and being the art director and business manager of the Theatre Co. has made for four busy years. And so the second recipient of the Melissa J. Rubin Award goes to one of the most honest and genuine students I have ever known, A.J. Perlin.

In terms of shop safety, there are a few rules in which to abide. Two of these are don’t let anything impair your vision, like long, unkempt hair that Eckhaus cuts once every 6 months, or loose clothing that might either get caught in tools or simply just fall off. However, our next award recipient did not let these two oversights get in the way of being a fantastic Technical Director of the Theatre Co. this year. Unlike most students, Jake had a seven day school week 8 out of the 10 months this year. His Saturdays and Sundays were spent, lifting, cutting, drilling, routering, gluing, building, hanging, cleaning, and all after making sure to pick up coffee and donuts on the way in. Through all of this, he seemed to keep his, and everyone’s spirits up by balancing by mixing dedication with a great deal of humor and just the right amount of sketch. So, the first recipient of the Theatre. Co. Award for outstanding contribution in Technical Theatre goes to Jacob Izraeli Watson.

If you happened to be passing through the halls of B Building during tech week, more affectionately known as Hell Week, and heard the cries of the sweat shop labor and witnessed children cutting fabric and sewing costumes, our next recipient was responsible. Clearly, she is a strong leader, this was also apparent from her role as Producer of SpringFest this past week. However, unlike real sweatshops, these children wanted to help her. Because they respect her, and because of her good hearted nature, her friends were more than willing to help. And maybe it is also because they knew she was responsible for how good or horrendous they were going to look on stage. She is truly a gifted costume designer, and so our next recipient for Outstanding Contribution in Technical Theatre is Kate Fulop.

A very well renowned acting teacher once asked our class why we did this – this thing called theatre. One student, thankfully not me, responded “because we love it.” She responded by saying that love is not enough. You do it because you have to, because you need to. You do it because you can’t see yourself doing anything else. In the past four years the next student has given up friends, family functions, social functions, and many other things that many teenagers take for granted; not because she wanted to, but because she had to. In doing this she has become the first true stage manager that I have seen here in the past 5 years. She is truly dedicated and takes pride in her work. Otherwise why would she choose to spend so much time with yours truly. And so, the final recipient of the Technical Theatre Award goes to Emily Suskin.

A couple of words to describe our final award recipient might include loud, fun, dedicated, loud, committed, talented… did I mention loud. In fact a student recently came into my office and asked “Is Ryan here?” to which another student responded “Do you hear him?” To his credit though, Ryan might be loud, but he has also found a voice that commands attention and demands respect. As the Asst. Producer and Director of the Theatre Company, he came to know what I expected from him, and how to communicate those expectations to the cast and crew. In addition, he was able to live up to his titles – he got things done. Whether it was raising money, organizing ads, procuring props or scenery, or making sure I had eaten, Ryan was the go-to guy and was able make it all happen. And so, the award for Leadership in the Theatre goes to Ryan Tunick.

Lastly, Constantine Stanislavski said that dramatic art, like all other arts which hold a mirror up to life requires talent, study and self perfection. Whether as a member of the Theatre Co. or Senior Musical you have all proven your talent and your want to study, so now I wish you all the best on your paths to self-perfection.

All the best in the future

- Schrauf

Senior Musical Director's Notes from 4/9/2008

Director’s Notes from 4/9/08

Dane Run trick with Anna (and me) before the show.
Say “The Royal Court…” then cut the band off.
Refold the trick blanket.
“OR” a newt on the root…
Catch grapes from Harper.
Present the crown to Phae.
Move your hand once you turn the chair on.

Harper Throw grapes to Dane.
Face downstage for the stabbing scene. Mask side seam on lightbox and touch up with black paint. (don't go over the chalk on the front of the lightbox- only paint the sides of the box)
2. Fix the wooden battens you made for the US legs:
- The wood should hang vertically not horizontally, with the eye hooks on the top edge.
- Check your knots. I'm afraid that one of the SR ones may be slipping.
- USE A LEVEL. (the batten should be level, the lines should be plumb)
-The battens don't need to be as far down from the pipe as you have them now. I'd like to be able to adjust their height from the floor.
-Have Schrauf check their positions before you're done.
3. Paint the interior of the "head" hole on the down stage extension black, including the bottom of the hole cover.
4. Paint the luan strip that covers the fogger and fire silk black again. It's looking beat-up.

Lights Finish Cues for Act II.
Is it possible for me to look at the cues I haven’t seen yet before tonight?

Make-up/ Flowers in Anna’s hair?
Hair No more buns or braids – more crazy, teased out style.
No more cheek color – it looks like a mistake.
“With You” girls need bigger/sexier hair.
Use a limited number of shapes – Troye will have a list tomorrow.
Darker/Brighter lip colors are now encouraged.
Application order:
Put on white face make up and powder.
Put on surrounding eye make up.
Put on heavy eye liner and mascara.
Put on lip stick.
Come to school and apply and powder shape.

Props Corey needs a wooden spoon with his pudding.
Do we need to make a paper hat for each show? Probably.
Lighter for Eric M. I'm glad you asked. It means that you might sit around for an entire 3 hour rehearsal and never be used! If that happened to me, I would be a little upset. To avoid this happening, please show up to rehearsals on time, and if you need to talk to your friends during rehearsal, wait until you are no longer in the auditorium. This will ensure that you don't waste three hours of your life for nothing.

In addition, I highly suggest that you bring food and/or homework to rehearsals for the periods of time you are not onstage. Remember, theatre is 15 minutes of performance and 2 hours and 45 minutes waiting for your turn to perform. Please be patient and come prepared!

I'll see y'all tonight!

I've been away a long time...

So much has happened since my last blog, so here we go...

1. Theatre Rep. Trip to London - thanks to the 12 of you for making the trip fun and painless. Angrette and I had a lot of fun hanging out with you for 8 days whilst trying to take in every attraction that London has to offer. Even though I needed a vacation from that vacation, I had an excellent time. I hope that you all did too, and that is something that will look fondly on in your futures past high school. As soon as I download the pictures from my camera, I will put some pix on the website. Thanks again for a great trip!

2. ...Cuckoo's Nest - I can't tell you how impressed and proud I am of all of you! The show was really fantastic. As I kept saying throughout rehearsal, there was nothing safe about this material, and even though it took you until tech week to understand that, you really pulled together for a great show. Your performances were gutsy, raw, believable, and powerful. Thank you all for your time, dedication, and talent.

3. Auditions for The Odd Couple - Yes, that's right ladies, Schraufnagel was not kind to you...again! There are only two female roles! Be prepared to make big choices and work on your British accents!

Boys - at this point Oscar and Felix are archetypal characters, so I'm not going to go into what I'm looking for in them. The poker buddies, however... I'm looking for 4 very different types of "neighborhoody" guys. Different shapes, sizes, personalities, acting choices, etc. I want 4 very distinct looking and acting personalities. I highly recommend reading the script before the audition if you are serious. It would also be helpful to brush up on your NYC accents!

4. Senior Musical - well... It's going well so far. However, as we get closer to show date, I would anticipate Howard, Linda, and me getting more stressed and irritable than normal. Please help make our jobs easier by being quiet and respectful during rehearsals. At some point very soon even the sound of 150 people whispering is going to sound like a buzz saw through my skull. So please....shhhh.

With that said, you have all been very cooperative and fun so far. All of us have enjoyed the energy, enthusiasm and talent that you have brought to rehearsals. Keep up the good work! It is coming up sooner than you think!

5. Spring Fest - The vote for Student Producers will take place next Thursday, March 20th at 2:45 in the Auditorium. Anyone interested in running or voting should come to that meeting after school! All Theatre Co. seniors are welcome to throw his/her hat in the ring, and any Theatre Co. underclassman is welcome to vote!

Well... a lot is coming up, so please check the blog and the website for updates! Until next time...

Peace.

Yes, Ryan... It is a new post!

Hey y'all...

I had a request for a new entry from someone who shall remain nameless (except in the title of the blog)... so here it is.

There are a couple of things to cover:

1. Theatre Repertory trip to London: I hope you are all as excited as I am to jump the pond next weekend. I'm looking forward to 8 days of theatre (with an "re",)sight-seeing, bubble & squeek, bonding, and fun!

Our final meeting to go over last minute details with both students and parents will take place on Tuesday, February 12th at 6pm in the Auditorium. Please make sure to bring your passport so that we can photocopy them for safety. See you then :o)

2. Cuckoo's Nest: A couple of things here. First, You all need to be off book by Monday, February 11th. Start memorizing now! You only have two weeks to work off book before Tech Week, and those two weeks are broken up by a week long break!

Second, some of you (not mentioning any names) are still pretty far behind on your making your Ad requirements! It is not too late. Please don't let the company down by slacking on your responsibilities. It is just not fair :o(

Third, after my rant yesterday, it was nice to see y'all taking more risks on stage today. However, you could still be more impulsive. I'm giving you carte blanche to go with any impulse you have on stage. Run with it! There is nothing about this material that is safe or pedestrian, so don't let your acting fall into this trap. I want to see more edgy, bold, specific choices in your acting!

3. Senior Musical: We are off to a good start! I have enjoyed what I have heard so far, and I hope you are all having fun. A few things to keep in mind:

First, please check the schedule often and come to all the rehearsals that you are scheduled for. If you can not make a rehearsal, please email me, Emily, A.J., or Ryan ASAP so that we know about it (and so we won't send you a cranky little email.)

Second, please try to keep it down during singing rehearsals. Even though all of you are not being used ALL the time, and you might think you are being quiet by whispering, the sound of a whisper multiplied by 150 is very loud! Try to keep it down so Howard can mold you into better singers.

Third, Linda had to cancel dances for this week, but they will resume next week! Please check the new schedule for any changes.

I think that is all for now... If anybody needs to reach me during the break, don't even try. I'll be too busy enjoying a spot of Earl Grey with Ella in Brighton.

Cheerio (That's the Queen's English for Peace.)

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://virtualcallboard.blogspot.com/2008/02/yes-ryan-it-is-new-post.html' title='Yes, Ryan... I liked it a lot. As my favorite musical of all time, I thought Tim Burton did a nice job with it. Here are some pros and cons:

Pros:
Johnny Depp - awesome, creepy, brooding. Best moment - the way in which he uses the razor as a knife to stab repeatedly into the judge.
Helena Bonham Carter - ditto. Best moment - the moment in which she realizes that Toby has to die.
Scenic Design - Dark, creepy, dirty, fantastic. Best bits - the huge slanted window looking onto London, and the chair tipping backwards so all the victims fall on their heads - sweet.
Gore/Blood - Very stylized, yet extremely effective and beautiful. The last moment in which Sweeney bleeds out over Lucy - brilliant!

Cons:
Singing - mostly schprectstima, but I think that was obvious from the trailer. Everything was almost whispered. It was a choice, but I missed Sweeney's big baritone.
Believability - because the movie was cast so young (which I liked and was much more believable for the time period,) it seemed odd that the judge wouldn't recognize him! I don't buy it.
Editing songs - most songs included had a verse or two cut out for the sake of not making a 3 hour film.
Cutting Songs - Besides cutting The Ballad of Sweeney Todd, the judges song, the letter, 98% of City on Fire, they also cut out the quartet which is my favorite number in the show, and also establishes the possible consummation of the relationship between Johanna and Antony. Without this encounter, why is he so dead set on marrying her or freeing her from Fog's asylum?

Overall, though, I do recommend the movie. One of the greatest stories ever written, and the best score in musical theatre history!

See y'all on Wed.

Peace.

Sweeney Todd...

The answer is... Most of you are already on your way, and for that I'm grateful and a little impressed. When you get back, I don't want to see scripts in your hands!

2. Stagecraft - Be ready to stay weekdays after school and on weekends to help Jake build for THE TEMPEST. As he is designing this show, he needs your help to make it happen.

3. Cast of ...Cuckoo's Nest - Break would be a great time to do some research on the show and your character, or to read the novel. I want to hear about the new information you found or crafted for your character when we pick up with rehearsals on January 2nd. Also, break would be a great time to go out in get ads. After the start of the new year, businesses will be less likely to donate, as well as your time will be impeded by Mid-Terms. Take my advice and start now!

4. To all - have a great break, get some rest, and try to get to the theatre. Tickets are a great holiday gift idea, and there is a lot of interesting work being produced in the city right now. Go see a show!

Peace.

Congratulations...

Hey y'all...

A few thoughts about auditions:

1. I thought everyone did a nice job at auditions. I especially appreciate all the new, and mostly freshmen, faces that I saw. Although this show has a smaller cast, and chances are that things probably didn't work out in your favor for this show, I appreciate your willingness to take a risk, put yourself out there, and audition. Don't let this one setback discourage you, and I hope to see all of you at all future auditions. If you have any questions regarding why you were not cast, please don't hesitate to email or come talk to me.

2. Ladies - I'm sorry. This is not the year for the abundance of female roles. I'll make it up to you next year.

3. If you had a larger role in Urinetown - please understand that it is important maintain some equity in the casting. You are all very talented, and it might just have been someone else's turn.

4. It is absolutely natural to feel disappointed or hurt if you were not cast. Unfortunately, disappointment and rejection are a huge part of this work. Try not to let it discourage you; instead use this experience to reflect on why things might have played out the way they did, and what you can possibly work on for next time. Know that we will miss you.

5. Congratulations to those of you who are in the cast. You have a long road ahead of you, and a lot of hard work. I hope you are all ready. Your souls are now mine... (insert demonic laughter here.)

6. I have only received two letters of interest in the tech jobs I described in my last entry. If you are interested, please let me know via email ASAP, or if you know someone who is interested and be good at the job, please encourage them to come see me. Rehearsals start this afternoon, and I want these people to get the full experience from beginning to end.

7. I'm looking forward to beginning our work this afternoon. I'm very excited for what this project has the potential to be. Let's make it happen.

Peace.

A little about ...Cuckoo's Nest Auditions

Hey y'all...

So, here are a few thoughts I wanted to share before ...Cuckoo's Nest auditions:

1. Although some of the roles of the inmates I am considering non-gender specific as of now, I am concerned about the male/female power dynamic between Nurse Rached and the men on her ward. Bottom line: It is really important! So... although it is important for all of you to really "bring it" to auditions, the stakes are now raised even higher for the ladies. If all the parts stay as written, there are only four female roles, so... I encourage all of you to really prepare and make strong choices for your auditions.

2. I am only considering students with little or no conflicts for the show!

Unlike Urinetown, we will not be rehearsing on the weekends. With only four weekends to build the set, that is where my attention will have to be on Saturdays and Sundays. However, with the exception of a small few, everyone in the show will need to be available everyday after school from 3:30 to 6:30. As we get to the week before the show you will need to be available until 7, and during Hell Week, until 8. NO EXCEPTIONS.

If you want this show, it needs to become your first extra-curricular priority. It is just too demanding, and relies on a strong group dynamic to be effective. This is very similar to Noises Off last year. I think if you ask the kids who were in Noises Off about their experience, they will tell you that although they were at school all the time, they had a lot of fun together, and it really led to a strong performance.

So please, let me see more blank space than writing in the conflict section of your Audition Form.

3. With a possible cast of 16, Ads are going to become an issue. The design for this show is intense, and can't be done without EVERYONE completing their ad assignments. If you think this is going to be an issue, or it has been an issue for you in the past, you might want to reconsider your participation in the show.

4. For those of you interested in Tech: I'm looking for sophomores or juniors who are interested in the positions of SM, TD, AD/AP, SCD, and ME to write me a short email of interest, so that we can talk about it. I would like these people to start shadowing Emly, Jake, Ryan, Kate, and DanDan for the duration of ...Cuckoo's Nest. In addition, I'm looking for a multi-media designer for this show. This would entail someone who is computer savvy to design sound and projections for the show. If you are interested, please shoot me an email and let me know.

With all that said, I look forward to seeing all of you at auditions tomorrow. Come prepared, and ready to rock 'n' roll. Make strong choices in your acting work, and come in to have a good time.

If you have read this entire post, feel free to skip the informative meeting at 2:45 tomorrow, and just show up 15 minutes before your scheduled audition time. See you then!

Peace.

A New Post!

Hello all...

With the show, and strike, and Thanksgiving, and the Talent show all crammed into three weeks, I have had very little time to post. But since so many of you have begging for a new post, here it is!

First, congratulations to the entire Theatre Company for a fantastic three days of Urinetown. I was pleased as punch with the final product. From the singing, to the acting, to the band, to the scenery, to the sound, etc., I was very proud of everyone and highly appreciate the amount of hard work and diligence that everyone put into the show. I hope that you are all proud of your work, and that you hopefully had some fun in the process (I have the reputation of being pretty demanding :o)

Second, thanks to everyone from the Theatre Dept. who lent their performing or technical talents to the Talent Show; especially A.J., Emily, DanDan, Dan S., Danny K., and Jake. Your time and hard work are appreciated, and you helped make everyone (including your's truly) look and sound better! It was a fun night.

Also this weekend, don't miss The Chappaqua Orchestra and Dance Emotions present The Nutcracker. Many of the same students helping with the Talent Show will also be lending their services to The Nutcracker. In addition, you don't want to miss the dance stylings of some of our Theatre Co. folk in action. Amongst others, Sammi E. will be performing, and the show stars the amazingly graceful Matthew M. Haas as The Prince. He sits in a throne like no other! :o)

Lastly, everyone should start getting prepared for the upcoming auditions for One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest on Dec. 10th. Audition info. and sides are available on the Callboard in the Greenroom. I'm looking to cast anywhere from 16-20 students. Many of the roles are being considered non-gender specific, and will not be decided until the auditions. In other words, I'm not sure how many M or F roles there are going to be exactly; that will be based on what I see at auditions. The play is a little different than the film, so if you would like to read an advance copy of the whole play, I have them to sign out in my office. It is a very demanding piece, so come to auditions prepared!

I look forward to this month full of music concerts, and a little bit of rest before we kick into full gear with the Rep. Co.'s production of The Tempest in Jan.

Peace.

Opening Night!

Great show last night, everybody!

The response has been overwhelmingly positive. I want to thank all of you on the hard work and talent that you are bringing to rehearsals. With less than a week away, though, there are a couple of things to keep in mind:

1. We most likely won't have the staircases and the aerial lift until our rehearsal next Tuesday! That said, everything else in the show needs to be solid. With the incorporation of those two major set pieces only two days before the show, it is important that you know all your stuff backwards and forwards.

2. We only have four more rehearsals with the band! Please review your music, lyrics, and choreography so that we can make the most out of our rehearsals with the musicians.

3. Be active ticket sellers! Encourage (pester) your family and friends to come to the show! The show is good... you want people to come see it!

4. If you took posters, hang them up! I haven't seen any in town. You want to play to a full house, believe me!

Overall... this is not the time to get tired and lazy. Do what you have to do to make sure that you are at 110% for the next two weeks. Get enough sleep, take 1000mg of Vitamin C a day, review your blocking, dialogue, music, lyrics, and choreography!

Get some rest... I'll see you all on Wednesday!

Schrauf.

Good stuff...

Hey y'all...

Rehearsals have been going very well! After yesterday, I'm very happy with how the first Act looks! I can't wait until we have more of the set at the end of next week.

Also... Congratulations on exceeding our goal in Ad Sales! As a company, y'all have raised more than we projected. That is fantastic! I don't remember the last time that happened. Most of you worked very hard, and I am very grateful!

In addition, thanks to A.J., Aleah, Ryan, Maile, and Evan for taking care of all the Ad sales, organization, and placement into the program! It is a lot of work, and everybody should take a second to thank them for all their hardwork.

Keep up the good work everyone, and I'll see you on Sat. for dance rehearsal.

Peace.

Good stuff... and ads :o(

Good news first: Jake and Ryan should be commended on their work in tracking down and negotiating essential elements of the set design. If you are not able to make it, you have to let the production team know (in writing) as soon as possible. Like I have mentioned before, if we have too many or not enough people for build, things become difficult. With too many people, a lot of y'all sit around and feel like we are wasting your time. With too few people, we don't get enough work done... and thus fall behind.

It is up to you how much (or how little) you learn in Stagecraft. So much of our work is hands on, and there is a great opportunity to learn by doing. If you prove that you are interested and committed, you have the potential to learn a great deal. Please prove to Angrette and me that you are both!

If you have any questions or concerns, feel free to approach Angrette, Jake, Emily, or me. We will be happy to let you know how to go about achieving your goals in the class.

I look forward to another successful build tomorrow! Some of you have not brought anything in yet :o( Remember, you only have a week and 1/2 left! Get out there and raise some $ for your show! You all acted very professional, and we were able to get a lot of work done. So...thank you!

However, we did not get as much done as we would have liked. Please take care of yourselves! You are no good to me sick. Here are some tips to stay healthy from me to you:

1. Carry a water bottle with you all day, and constantly drink from it. When it is empty, refill it at one of our convenient bubblers and repeat. Don't share your water bottle with anyone!

2. Take at least 500mg of Vitamin C a day. Emergen-C packets or Airborne have a ton of Vitamin C and go well with your bottle of water.

3. Stop canoodling with each other.

Stay healthy... like I said, you are no good to me sick!

Peace.

Make up rehearsals and such...

Hey y'all...

Make sure that you check the rehearsal schedule if you have not done so recently. Both days are Full Cast rehearsals, so I expect everyone to be there anyway.

Also... I'm getting slightly concerned about ad and ticket sales. Besides two or three cast members, we have not seen an ads! Don't wait until the last minute! Some businesses will take more than one trip, so give yourself enough time. Both A.J. and I will talk more about this with y'all tomorrow.

I have been happy with rehearsals so far. The kids I have worked with have been very fun and funny! I look forward to hearing all of you sing at this afternoon's rehearsal!

If you need to leave rehearsal early today, or can not come at all due to the Jewish holiday, please try to remind me during the day. We have all of your conflicts written down, but a quick reminder always helps me.

Other things to remember:

1. Don't wait until the last minute to solicite businesses for ads! The quicker they come in, the easier it is for Ryan and Evan to get the program together, the less worrying I have to do, and the sooner you can focus on your work on-stage. Remember, there is a fantabulous prize for the team that raises the most money! Be that team.

2. For those of you without scripts: they will be given out this afternoon. Please don't leave them laying around, and remember to bring them to every rehearsal you are scheduled for (along with a pencil!)

3. Please check the rehearsal schedule on a regular basis. If I need to reschedule anything, I will do so on the schedule on the website. There is now a link on the main page so it will be easier to get to!

Lastly, thank you to A.J., Marge (A.J.'s mom,) and Aleah for organizing the ad campaign. I truly appreciate all your hard work. Also, thanks to Ryan, Emily, Maile, and all the kids that helped label and organize the mass mailing. I know it is tedious, but it really does let the Greeley community know what we are up to. Thanks!

Looking forward to more excellent rehearsals.

Peace.

(Feel free to leave comments.)

First Rehearsal...

Hey y'all...

Great read of Act I today! If you couldn't hear me (which I find impossible,) I found y'all very funny. That means I laughed... out loud... a lot. I appreciate everything you bring to the table as actors/artists, and it only gives me that much more material to work with. I think I have some funny ideas... I hope y'all eventually agree.

For those of you that might feel that you sat around today... Please know that what exists on the page is simply a blueprint. What you each contribute to the show (whether it be acting, dancing, singing, or a combination,) makes the show complete. Even though you might not have any lines, that is not what's important. It is what you bring to the table as an actor and artist that will make your role memorable, and part of the overall fabric of the show.

To the returning members of the company: I know that the upperclassmen will take the newbies under their wings. So... Upperclassmen, please make the new members of our company feel welcome and include them in your activities. You were there once, ya know? Your experiences over the past 1, 2, or 3 years can be helpful to our first time Musical members.

To the new members of the company: The company is happy to have you! As long as you be yourselves, y'all will fit in just fine! If you have any questions or concerns, feel free to ask me, Ryan, Emily, or any Upperclassman for advice. I'm sure any of us would be more than happy to help.

I look forward to seeing all of you again tomorrow for Act II. Most of you could have played numerous roles, and you did not make our decision making any easier.

So... congratulations to all, and I look forward to seeing all of you at the first read through on Monday, September 17th. For Monday, plan on going through Act I, playing some games, as well as going over the contract and the schedule for September. If you can not make it on Mon., or feel like you can no longer do the show, please shoot me an email or come talk to me on Mon.

Also, if you want to discuss your audition or the casting process, feel free to stop by my office on Mon. If I'm not teaching class, that is where I will be.

If you didn't get the part you were hoping for....listen, it is absolutely natural and normal to feel disappointed. Unfortunately, this is a reality of the theatre. I you want to come talk about it, my door is always open and I'll try my best to explain my rationale and, hopefully, help you improve for next time.

To repeat myself... I am thrilled with this cast and I look forward to leading you to a funny and biting production in November. We have lots of work to do, so get some rest this weekend. We begin in 5 days!

P.S. Thank you to Ms. Callan, Ms. Kuan, Ryan, and Emily for all your help with auditions and callbacks. Y'all are the bomb.

Peace. (Feel free to click on "Comment" and leave me a message regarding audtions/callbacks/casting/whatever! Believe it or not, I do listen to what you have to say :o)

Update on Auditions!

Everyone auditioning for Urinetown needs to meet in the Chorus Room to review music on Monday, September 10th at 3:30 pm. The auditions will begin at 4:00 pm sharp!

Spend some time reviewing your music before the audition, and break a leg!

Also... The production team is extremely excited about the project, and we hope to see all of you at auditions. I'm looking forward to seeing all of your familiar faces again, but I would also like to see some new faces. So... convince your friends that might never have been on stage before to come out, take a risk, and audition!

As of now, Vocal/Acting Auditions will take place on Monday, September 10th with Dance Auditions on Wednesday, September 12th. Remember you have to sign up and show up to BOTH auditions! With Rosh Hashanah break on Thursday and Friday of that week, we won't be able to have Callbacks until Monday, September 17th. We'll all just have to be a little patient.

I highly suggest that you educate yourself on the show before you audition. The show is extremely funny and has a lot of principal and featured roles. If you want to read the script, I will have copies available in my office. Unfortunately, due to an impending law suit, the video of the show at the Library of the Performing Arts at Lincoln Center is currently on restriction. However, there are numbers from community and college productions available on YouTube.com. Just type "Urinetown" into the search box.

Feel free to comment on the show selection in the link at the bottom of this post. I'd like to know what you think of the show. Also, Seniors, take some time to fill out the Senior Musical poll to your right. It will help us get a preliminary vote before the official vote later in the fall.

See you all in a week!

Learning Log - Week 8: The Video

Q: How can you prepare a language arts lesson that uses technology?

Software Applications:

Word Processing - Like mentioned in the video, Word Processing programs are applicable across the curriculum, and certainly apply to my theatre and speech classes. From constructing speeches, to playwriting, to text analysis, my students use Word Processing on a daily basis for numerous lessons.

Discussion Boards - Could be helpful in the exchange of ideas and cooperative learning in discussing a specific text(s), its themes, etc. Like I mentioned earlier, it just needs to be monitored closely to prevent Cyber-bullying and making sure that all written "voices" are heard.

Video-Conferencing - Similar to the Discussion Board, it allows students to share ideas in relation to a play or text, however now they get to practice their oral language skills as opposed to their written.

Web-Projects:

Web Quests - This could be a great method for having the students research and explore more information on a certain play or playwright. Because the nature of Web Quests lends itself to small group work, it also promotes cooperative learning.

Virtual Field Trips - Again, it can give students the opportunity to visit someplace like the Ancient Roman theaters during a Roman theatre History Unit, without ever leaving the classroom. It then can provide multiple opportunities to inspire written or verbal discussion or work.

Authoring:

Hypermedia tools - Students can make aural/visual/text projects on speech topics, plays, playwrights, actors, etc. that can also be linked to the class website for a greater audience. This type of authoring certainly lends itself to students utilizing more of their multiple intelligences, as opposed to a traditional "book report."

Learning Log - Week 8: The Readings

Q: Which strategies can you adapt to help students who need help with reading?

1. Internet resources to engage students in literature - finding specific websites based on the plays or texts we are reading in order to provide background and analysis in the hopes to make the reading (especially the classical texts) more relevant to the students.

2. Internet resources to motivate student reading - websites that provide additional readings based on the text, but also accomodate students different interests.

3. Talking Books - this seems like a strategy to engage younger readers and I'm not sure where this would fit into my curriculum.

4. Tracking Systems - again, this seems like a strategy aimed at younger grade levels, but could be useful for younger high school students still struggling with reading comprehension. This seems to be more supplemental and used outside the classroom to strengthen skills.

Q: How can you use technology to assist in the writing process within your classroom?

1. Electronic Publishing - putting students work, such as their short plays, on my class website can motivate them to spend more time writing.

2. Keypals - discussing plays and other literature with students from around the globe would give students an audience for their writing and encourage them to take more time and care.

3. Concept Mapping - in my playwriting class, it could help students map out the plot and characters of their one act plays.

4. Spelling and Grammar Checkers - this is pretty obvious. I personally can't imagine using these tools on any writing I do; assists in teaching correct spelling, grammar, and usage.

5. Discussion Boards/Threaded Discussions - could provide a safe environment for students to express their thoughts and ideas. However, it would have to be monitored pretty close in order to prevent Cyber-bullying and the like.

6. Blogs - used as an online journal, students are motivated to write concerning topics being covered in class. It also provides an opportunity for others to read and respond to the journal entries.

Q:Consider the English language learners in your classroom and describe strategies for using technology to assist them in their language development.

1. Images downloaded from the Internet - for use as "visual scaffolding" as well as incorporating Gardner's theory of Multiple Intelligences and providing a catalyst for students to discuss, read, and write about.

2. Interactive "Storybooks" - perhaps hearing online readings of plays and other texts could strengthen language skills.

3. Presentation Aids - especially in my public speaking class, visual formats accompanying a speech teach students how to use language effectively to communicate.

4. Virtual Field Trips - Students get to see places they would normally not see; and thus have the opportunity to discuss and write about them. For example, taking a virtual field trip to The Globe during a Shakespeare lesson.

5. Listening Labs - to help with listening comprehension, but could also aid in improving interpretation of Old English and foreign dialects often used in the theatre.

Learning Log - Week 7: The Readings

Q: Categorize the tools you use for administrative purposes into the six categories of software support tools.

Materials Generators: I have used MS Publisher to create programs, posters, and flyers for shows, but I have found that I am more familiar with Word, and it basically gives me the same options in creating these items. Maybe I just don't know how to use the program that well.

Since most of my assessment is performance based, I don't give a lot of quizzes or tests. Most handouts I have created on my own in Word. I would like to try some test generating software this year for the two big tests I give. I have no idea what kind of software the district has...I would have to investigate that. The Rubric Generator would be a great tool for me! Again, I'll have to see if my district has the software.

I am constantly using PDF and form making software for contracts, letters, and sending things to publishers. Remember: Anything you don't want to be altered, send in PDF format!

Data Collection and Analysis Tools: I use Infinite Campus as my electronic grade book and attendance record. It also serves as a SIS. We switched to it a year ago, so I am still learning some tricks.

Graphic Tools: I am constantly using Photoshop and Illustrator to help with program design as well as some handouts. It also helps in taking past production photos and turning them into flyers, examples on paper, etc.

Organizing Tools: I am still Lesson Planning the old fashioned way. I would like to explore the software that would help with the formatting. Again, I'm not sure if my district has any...

For scheduling and time management, I am basically just working off of MS Outlook. The calendar in there sends me reminders when I have CSE meetings, meetings with parents, when things need to get to the printer/photocopier, etc. I find this most helpful!

Research and Reference Tools - Very rarely do I need to use an online encyclopedia, but on occasion to refresh on a play or playwright I might. I also find that Word has a thesaurus, so I'm not using online dictionaries and thesauri a lot.

Content Area Tools - I use CAD in my Stagecraft class when it comes to designing scenery. I don't how to use it very well, and I certainly need to take a class! I would like to give my students more opportunities to design with CAD. I would also love to get my hands on some Lighting Design software.

Besides my stagecraft class, I don't think there is much software designed specifically to assist in acting...

Q: Which tools could you use with students that would enhance your lessons?

Like I stated earlier, I would love to start using some more CAD and design programs with the students, especially for those going on into those career fields. Although they will be introduced to it in college, I would like to give those with the interest a head start.

PowerPoint definitely aids in my Public Speaking class, and has become a necessary skill.

Perhaps some screen or playwriting software could help in my Playwriting and Directing class. At least making sure that everyone's play is in the same format.

Q: Based on the research findings in the chapter, what applications of hypermedia and multimedia are most effective?

"Research finds that multimedia's benefits center on its ability to offer students multiple channels through which to process information. Several studies also have offered recommendations on designing and using multimedia products for instructional purposes" (Roblyer 209.) In light of Gardner's theory of Multiple Intelligences, this only makes sense, and it seems that almost any application of multimedia can be effective in teaching and learning. Whether it be presentation software, video, audio, VR or a combination of all, it seems that multimedia can only help to keep the teacher and students engaged.

How will the findings change the choices you make in your own classroom?

I would like to try to incorporate some of it into my own teaching. Possibly using PowerPoint when doing a Theatre History lecture, or the like.

In the past I have made it optional to do a PowerPoint presentation in my Public Speaking class, but I think I'm going to make it mandatory this year. I feel it will make their speeches more dynamic, keep their interest, and add that component of 21 Century preparation that is being pushed by the administration.

Learning Log: Week 6 - The Video

Q: How does the fifth-grade teacher organize her students for the social studies activity that uses keyboarding?

Each student has access to their own computer so that there is equity in the use of the technology. In addition, the teacher goes through step by step, the directions, as well as she demonstrates them with the help of an LCD screen attached to her computer. She also periodically checks students work to make sure that they are on task.

Q: What word processing and technical skills do students need to use a computer to complete a writing assignment? How would you teach these skills?

First, the students need to be familiar with the program/system before they can even open a blank Word document. By the time they get to high school, they probably know how to do this, but in a beginning lesson, the teacher should review the process with the whole class. Also, I think it is important that the software amongst schools in the district are alike. This would save time in having to re-teach to a new program or OS.

Secondly, the students need to be able to type! I don't think they teach typing in our district. I know I had to take it in 9th grade and it has clearly become an invaluable skill. I liked that the teacher's district required students to take typing in 5th and 6th grade, so that by the time they reach middle school, they have adequate 10-finger typing skills. If we want educational equity, we have to keep teaching our students these skills.

Learning Log: Week 6 - The Reading

Q: Consider the tips for teaching students to use each of the three basic software tools.
Which skills have you already taught? Did you skip any of the basics?

Word Processing - By the time students get to my classes in high school, they have already mastered a lot of the basic skills of the program, so I do skip a lot of the basics. I do take some time to illustrate how I prefer to have things formatted, and how to document sources (this is always a must.) I also encourage the students to take the last five minutes of the period to title, spell-check, and save their work in order to avoid disasters.

Spreadsheets - In my classwork, I have little use for Excel. In my extra-curricular work (setting budgets and recording spending for shows) a few students and I use it constantly. I find that the students usually know more than I do. I know how to set up a basic spreadsheet, and know some of the formula commands (and know how to instruct the students to do so), but I certainly could use a lesson or two. Because I only have one or two students a year using this with me, it is easy to sit along side them an instruct them.

Databases - I do not think I have ever used a database with students. I personally only use it to sort, file, and locate information.

Q: Are there more advanced features that you need to learn better?

Word Processing - I think I am pretty familiar with Word. If anything, I would like to memorize more of the shortcuts so I don 't have to pull a drop down menu for commands, and I would like to become more familiar with inserting/creating graphs and charts.

Spreadsheet - I definitely need to know how use more of the formula commands, as well as integrate Excel info. into Word documents and all the Graphic/Interactive/Web features.

Databases - I know almost nothing about Databases, and would need to take a class in order to learn how to use it in my teaching.

Q: The companion site for the textbook provides links to many online tutorials for common software packages. Summarize in your own words the research on instructional use of software tools.

Word Processing - The use of MS Word and other word processing programs have helped both teachers and students save time in preparation and assignments. Aesthetically, Word has also improved the quality of papers that were once hand written - and most of the time illegible. Word also provides the opportunity for documents to be shared by students and teachers, thus promoting cooperative learning. In addition, assignments can be "handed-in" across large distances by attaching them to emails. Research has proven both a better quality and greater quantity of writing by students who use word processing programs (Roblyer, 124.)

Spreadsheets - The use of spreadsheets have helped teachers and students save time when documenting numbers or data (mostly in the Science and Math classrooms.) With the right formula, data can be processed as quickly as one can type the numbers. Because of this, it helps not only the aesthetic display of information, but allows the user to play with the numbers to visualize hypothetical situations. Research has shown that spreadsheets can aid in teaching across the curriculum in "topics ranging from mathematics to social studies" (Roblyer, 131.)

Databases - Although I don't know a lot about teaching with databases, the text does show its benefits. They strengthen research, study, and organization skills; as well as show "how to make decisions based on information summaries" (Roblyer, 142.) They also aid in demonstrating how to ask the right questions to encourage problem solving.

Learning Log: Week 5 - The Readings

Q: Describe the different types of instructional software in your own words.

Drill & Practice - Users are given problems or questions, they are asked to answer them, and then have their answers assessed. Directed Instruction. Pros: Immediate feedback, it saves teachers preparation and instruction time, motivates students. Cons: Using to teach new concepts instead of reinforcing learned ones, non-integrated teaching method

Tutorial - Like a human tutor, it provides the information and activities for students, in order to gain knowledge on a specific topic. Tutorials stand alone: students should be able to learn information or concepts without other assistance or materials. Directed Instruction. Pros: Self contained, self-paced instructional method, includes drill and practice. Cons: directed learning/not hands-on, lack of good software, disagreement in approaches between teachers and software.

Simulation - virtually models real or imaginary things/places/etc. to show how they work or demonstrate key concepts. Combination of Directed and Constructivist Instruction. Pros: Can compress or slow down the time of complex processes in order to investigate them, safety of experiments, save $ and resources. Cons: accuracy of the software, replacing hands-on experiments and investigations.

Instructional Game - Applies game or gaming rules to Drill & Practice and/or Simulation activities in hopes to increase motivation in students. Combination of Directed and Constructivist Instruction. Pros: Makes learning fun, retention over time. Cons: Recognizing the difference between learning and having fun, applying the learning in games to life situations, pinpointing ed. value, becoming an "electronic babysitter."

Problem Solving - Goes through the steps of solving a problems, as well as gives students the opportunity to solve problems on their own. Combination of Directed and Constructivist Instruction. Challenging activities, motivating students to spend more in depth time on a project, illustrates situations in which to use skills. Cons: Clarity of skills being taught, not learning intended skills, not suiting learning needs of all students, non-transference of skills.

Q: Where can you envision using these tools in your classroom?

Drill & Practice - I don't give very many exams that are not performance based, but for my Theatre History and Stagecraft exams I can understand how this type of software could help motivate students to study for an exam. However, I tend to doubt the availability and/or abundance of Theatre History and Stagecraft software.

Tutorials - Again, could be helpful for students, especially special needs students, to help review material already covered in class. In addition, it could be helpful for students who have a particular interest in a certain genre of theatre that is not covered in that class, to explore further.

Simulations - This could be useful in taking field trips to places that no longer exist (ancient Greek theaters, or medieval pageants) or visiting places that are not relatively close (Shakespeare's Globe in London.)

Instructional Game: Not quite sure when I would use this. I would like to get the electronic classroom Jeopardy game to review for tests with my students, but that seems to be more drill and practice than instructional. Are there instructional acting/directing/playwriting games?

Problem Solving - Possibly in the technical area of theatre, especially with light and sound. Breaking down problems into their components could be helpful for students.

Learning Log - Week 4: The Reading

Q: In your own words, what are important elements in Internet supported assignments?

First, the use of the internet can not be an end in itself. The use of the internet as a resource should be treated like previous, less technologically based, resources.

The use of the Internet should be tied directly into a component of the curriculum, and then used as a resource to enhance the activity, and not become the activity. The information, pictures, audio, that are found on the Web, should then be directly used in the assignments, and not merely located.

Also, it is important to take into consideration the technological skill level of both the students and the teacher. Do the students have the necessary information and skills to use the Internet effectively for the assignment, and will the teacher have the time, skill, and support to help his/her students succeed?

Q: Use the Web page evaluation checklist and criteria for evaluating Web pages to develop your own critical eye: develop written or mental criteria for Web pages.

The important things that jumped out at me whilst reviewing the Checklist:

Content:
- Information is accurate and up to date!
- Information is well organized and interesting.
- No offensive or coarse material.
- Language, spelling, grammar appropriate for the students' skill levels.
- Gives a contact.

Visual and Audio Design:
- They make a contribution to the page, they don't simply stand alone.
- Easily readable.
- Aesthetically pleasing.
- They make people want to read the content.

Navigation:
- Pages load quickly, it is fast!
- Links, buttons, etc. are clearly labeled and easy to find.

Misc.:
- Limited use of student pics and info.
- Connected to district Homepage.

Q: Use the top ten strategies and integration examples to guide you to Internet resources with proved value.

I went to the ePals project: Unsung Heroes http://www.epals.com/projects/unsung_heroes/

This interactive project with other schools around the world looks to be a great way for students to recognize the achievements of heroes in their community, in their classes, in their country, and around the globe. Then, assuming it will take the students a little longer than the teacher, estimate the time needed and divide by the class periods length. Like the teacher in the video, I would also constantly walk around the class/lab to make sure that students were on task and gage the amount and quality of information they are finding.

I would also recommend leaving the last five minutes of class for students to print any material that they need, or save anything to their account.

Q: How will you prepare for an activity that uses the Internet?

Preparation would include booking adequate time in the computer lab, as well as doing a test run of the lesson to gage its effectiveness.

Week 3 - Learning Log - The Readings Part II

Q: What is information literacy and why is it important?

Information literacy refers to the skills that students need have in order to effectively and legally find information on the Internet. How does technology fit into your teaching style?

I think that I mix the constructivist and directed styles. All my classes are primarily based on speech or acting performance. So there are times when information and/or directions need to be directly transmitted, but then plenty of time and opportunity for the students to explore, research, and rehearse (in large groups, small groups, and individually.)

For this I use technology to create rubrics and transmit that information to my students. In finding pieces or research for the class, the students use the internet or online sources. Many students create PowerPoint presentations to accompany their speeches, especially in informative and persuasive speeches; and many students take advantage of video during their demonstration speeches. We also use video to record their scenes or monologues and then use the play back for self-evaluation.

After writing this out, I'm finding that I use technology more in the classroom than I thought. I'm interested to see how what I learn through the courses will be able to help me in my teaching of acting, playwriting, and directing since so much of the coaching is hands-on.

Well, I've already learned how to start a blog, so I guess I'm on my way.

Peace.
